Jose Gregorio Hernandez facts start in Isnotú, a small village in the State of Trujillo in Venezuela, where José Gregorio Hernández Cisneros was born on 26 October 1864. He was one of six children of Benigno María Hernández y Manzaneda and Josefa Antonia Cisneros y Mansilla. In his youth, at thirteen, he wanted to go to law school and become a lawyer, but his mother persuaded him to pursue medicine instead.
That choice shaped a life that would link study, service, and devotion. Hernández was a Venezuelan physician and an active member of the Third Order of Saint Francis. He became a highly renowned doctor, and his reputation grew even more after his death.
How did José Gregorio Hernández become a doctor?
He built his medical career through formal study in Venezuela and Europe. In 1882, Hernández graduated from Colegio Villegas with a baccalaureate in philosophy. Six years later, in 1888, he graduated as a medical doctor from the Central University of Venezuela.
The Venezuelan government awarded him a grant to continue his studies in Europe. Hernández traveled to Paris, where he studied bacteriology, pathology, microbiology, histology, and physiology. Those subjects helped prepare him for the work he would later do back in Venezuela.
After returning home, he became a leading doctor at the Hospital José María Vargas. His practice was marked by free care for the poor, and he even bought medicines for them with his own money. In 1918, he treated patients in Caracas who had caught the Spanish flu.
Why was he so revered after his death?
After Hernández died, people around Venezuela said that miracles had been experienced in cases where his intercession before God had been invoked. That devotion helped make him a beloved figure long before the Church formally recognized him.
The path to sainthood took years. He was beatified in 2021 by Pope Francis. Later, Pope Francis approved his canonization in early 2025, and Pope Leo XIV canonized him on 19 October 2025.
For many Venezuelans, that date joined a long memory already tied to his life and care for the poor. His birthday, 26 October, was declared a day of national celebration in 2011, adding an official honor to the devotion that had grown around him.
What stands out about José Gregorio Hernández’s legacy?
José Gregorio Hernández is remembered for the combination of training, charity, and religious commitment that marked his life. He studied in Caracas and Paris, worked at the Hospital José María Vargas, and treated poor patients without charging them. He also remained an active member of the Third Order of Saint Francis throughout his life.
His story connects a small village in Trujillo State, a medical career in Caracas, and a canonization in 2025. Born in 1864, educated in 1882 and 1888, honored in 2011, beatified in 2021, and canonized in 2025, his timeline is unusually clear and deeply tied to Venezuelan memory.
