His path is easy to follow once the dates line up: 1986, 1994, 2000, 2013, and 2021 each mark a turn.
How did Jeff Bezos start Amazon?
Jeff Bezos founded Amazon in mid-1994 on a road trip from New York City to Seattle. He had graduated from Princeton University in 1986 with a degree in engineering, then worked on Wall Street from 1986 to early 1994 before building the company.
Amazon began as an online bookstore before expanding into a much broader e-commerce business. That shift turned a focused retail idea into a far larger digital marketplace, while Bezos remained the central figure behind it.
When did Bezos leave Amazon’s top job?
On July 5, 2021, Bezos stepped down as Amazon's CEO and president and became executive chairman. That date closed one chapter of Amazon’s leadership while keeping him tied to the company in a different role.
He also launched the Amazon Kindle in November 2007, adding a major new product to the company’s retail and reading business. The Kindle launch came years before his later move away from day-to-day executive leadership.
What did Bezos do outside Amazon?
Jeff Bezos founded Blue Origin in 2000. He later flew into space on Blue Origin NS-16 in 2021, linking the company he created with a personal spaceflight milestone.
In 2013, Bezos purchased The Washington Post and announced the purchase for $250 million in cash. That same year, his business interests clearly stretched beyond Amazon into media ownership.
How wealthy did Bezos become?
Bezos was the world’s wealthiest person from 2017 to 2021. In March 2018, Forbes formally designated him the wealthiest person in the world with a net worth of $112 billion.
In July 2018, his net worth increased to $150 billion, and he was named the "richest man in modern history." Those figures made his rise especially striking in the world of business wealth.
Did Bezos invest in Google?
Yes. In 1998, Bezos invested $250,000 in Google. That investment later resulted in 3.3 million shares worth about $3.1 billion in 2017.
That single early bet became one of the most notable side investments connected to his name, alongside Amazon, Blue Origin, and The Washington Post.
