Play this story's trivia (2 questions)Minecraft began as a small Java project and ended up changing the shape of modern gaming. If you’re looking for minecraft facts, the story starts on 17 May 2009, when Markus "Notch" Persson first released the game publicly as an alpha version.
How Minecraft started
Markus "Notch" Persson originally created Minecraft using the Java programming language. He founded Mojang Studios in 2009, the same year he released the original edition of Minecraft on 17 May 2009; he later called that version the Classic version.
Persson also left his job at jAlbum in 2010 after Minecraft’s Alpha version became successful. The game moved from a personal experiment to a project with momentum fast enough to reshape Persson’s own work life.
Minecraft was formally released for personal computers on 18 November 2011. After its full release, Jens "Jeb" Bergensten was handed control over the game’s development.
How fast the player base grew
Minecraft reached 1 million registered accounts in January 2011. Six months later, it had reached 20 million registered accounts, a jump that showed how quickly players were arriving.
By March 2012, Minecraft had sold 5 million copies and generated US$80 million in revenue. That sales run came before the game’s biggest ownership change and before the wider ecosystem around it fully matured.
In November 2014, Microsoft bought Mojang and the Minecraft intellectual property for US$2.5 billion. By that point, Minecraft had already become a major force in games, and the purchase placed the franchise under one of the world’s biggest software companies.
What made Minecraft spread so widely?
The game’s social media, parodies, adaptations, merchandise, and annual Minecon conventions helped popularize it. Minecraft did not grow through one channel alone; it built a presence across videos, fan creations, products, and live gatherings tied to the game.
That spread also lined up with major services built around play. In 2013, Mojang announced Minecraft Realms as a server hosting service for easy and safe multiplayer. The service was designed to make multiplayer easier to set up and more controlled for players.
The largest and most popular Minecraft server is Hypixel, which has been visited by over 14 million unique players. Alongside official services, large player-run spaces became part of the game’s identity.
How big did Minecraft become?
Minecraft is the best-selling video game of all time, with over 400 million copies sold. That single number captures how far the game traveled from its first public alpha release in 2009.
The Minecraft Marketplace also became a major part of the game’s economy. By 2022, it had over 1.7 billion content downloads and generated over $500 million in revenue.
The path from a Java project by Markus Persson to a global platform runs through clear milestones: the first public alpha on 17 May 2009, the formal PC release on 18 November 2011, Microsoft’s US$2.5 billion purchase in November 2014, and the continuing scale of the marketplace and servers built around it.
