The Super Bowl has been the final game of every NFL season since 1966, and its early years already set up a few of the league’s biggest storylines. If you’re looking for super bowl trivia, the first thing to know is that the game began before the name itself was fixed.
What was the Super Bowl called at first?
The Super Bowl was originally called the AFL–NFL World Championship Game until the Super Bowl name was adopted in Super Bowl III. That change came after the first two leagues had already split the first four title games between them.
The first four Super Bowls were played before the merger, and the NFL and AFL each won two. Since the fifth edition in January 1971, Roman numerals have been used to identify each Super Bowl, with one later exception: Super Bowl 50.
Who has won the most Super Bowls?
The Pittsburgh Steelers and New England Patriots are tied for the most Super Bowl titles with six each. The New England Patriots also hold the record for the most appearances, having played in twelve Super Bowls.
That record total of twelve trips stands out next to the teams that stayed perfect in the title game. The Baltimore Ravens and Tampa Bay Buccaneers are the only franchises to be undefeated in multiple Super Bowls, with two wins each.
At the other end of the results sheet, the Buffalo Bills made history for a different reason. They played in a record four consecutive Super Bowls and lost all four.
Which team finished the only perfect season?
The 1972 Miami Dolphins completed the only perfect season in NFL history with their Super Bowl VII victory. That place in the record book comes directly from finishing the season without a loss and then winning the championship game.
The Super Bowl has also produced some of the biggest one-game margins the league has seen. The 1989 San Francisco 49ers delivered the most lopsided victory in Super Bowl history, beating the Denver Broncos 55–10 in Super Bowl XXIV.
Who owns the Super Bowl MVP records?
Tom Brady is the only player to have won five Super Bowl MVP awards. No one else has more than four.
There has also been one shared MVP honor in Super Bowl history. Harvey Martin and Randy White were the only co-MVPs in Super Bowl history.
From the first AFL–NFL title game to Roman numerals, from perfect seasons to repeat champions, the Super Bowl has built a long list of milestones. Keep these facts in mind, then test yourself with the quiz below.
