Stranger Things Trivia: Hawkins, the Upside Down, and More

Stranger things trivia starts in Hawkins, Indiana, but the road there began with a different name: Montauk. From there, the series grew into a 1980s-set story about missing boys, secret labs, and a world hidden behind an ominous rift.
How did Stranger Things begin?
The first season of Stranger Things was released on Netflix on July 15, 2016. It opens when Will Byers is abducted by a creature from the Upside Down called the Demogorgon, setting the town of Hawkins on edge.
The show’s earliest mystery is tied to Eleven, whose powers are central to the story. She disappears after killing the Demogorgon in the first season, and the series keeps circling back to the strange connection between her and the Upside Down.
What is the Upside Down in Stranger Things?
The Upside Down is a wormhole that connects Earth to a hostile realm called the Abyss. In the show’s storyline, Eleven creates it, and that connection becomes the source of the series’ biggest threats.
That idea grows in the second season, when the Mind Flayer is introduced as a hive mind connected to anything from the Upside Down. The show does not stop at one monster, either. Dustin teams up with Steve Harrington to fight adolescent Demogorgons called Demodogs, adding another layer to the Hawkins nightmare.
Who are the main villains in Stranger Things?
The main villains shift from season to season, but each one stays tied to the same dark world. The Demogorgon drives the first season’s central abduction. The Mind Flayer expands the threat in the second season. Vecna then takes over the fourth season as the Hawkins Laboratory’s first test subject.
Vecna targets Max as his fourth victim in the fourth season. That season ends with a devastating set of events: Eleven regains her powers, Eddie dies, Max becomes comatose, and rifts open throughout Hawkins.
What happens in the later seasons?
The third season moves the action underground and under bright lights at Starcourt Mall. There, a secret Soviet laboratory beneath the mall attempts to reopen the gateway to the Upside Down. The show keeps its Hawkins setting, but the mystery spreads through new corners of town.
The fifth and final season was released in three volumes in November and December 2025. It reveals that the Upside Down is a wormhole between Hawkins and another dimension known as the Abyss. By the end, the group kills Vecna and the Mind Flayer and destroys the Upside Down.
Why is Stranger Things so tied to the 1980s?
Stranger Things is set in the 1980s in the fictional town of Hawkins, Indiana, and that setting is part of its identity. The series is described as a touchstone of 1980s nostalgia and a flagship series for Netflix.
That blend of period detail and supernatural mystery is what makes the show easy to follow from one season to the next. The story keeps returning to Hawkins, Eleven, the Upside Down, and the creatures and villains that come from it, while the decade gives everything a clear visual and cultural frame.
If you know the Demogorgon, Vecna, and the fate of Hawkins, you’re ready for the quiz.
