Play this story's trivia (4 questions)Studio Ghibli facts begin with a studio that was built to blow a new wind through anime. Founded on June 15, 1985, by Hayao Miyazaki, Isao Takahata, and Toshio Suzuki after acquiring Topcraft's assets, it quickly became one of Japanese animation's defining names.
How did Studio Ghibli get its name?
Studio Ghibli got its name from Miyazaki, who chose it from the Italian nickname of Italy's Saharan scouting plane Caproni Ca.309. The studio's identity was tied to a very specific idea from the start: a new wind through the anime industry, not a recycled formula.
That spirit showed up in a body of work that went beyond feature films. Studio Ghibli's output includes short subjects, television commercials, and two television films, alongside the features that made the studio a household name among animation fans.
Which Ghibli character is the mascot?
Totoro is Studio Ghibli's most recognizable character and mascot. That single figure became one of the clearest symbols of the studio's style, appearing as the face many people connect with Ghibli before they even name a film.
The studio's catalog helped build that recognition. Four Studio Ghibli films are among the ten highest-grossing Japanese feature films, and two of the studio's films won the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature. Those awards placed Ghibli firmly inside both Japanese film history and the wider international awards circuit.
Why does Studio Ghibli insist on careful foreign releases?
Studio Ghibli's strict no-edits policy in foreign licensing was shaped by the heavily edited U.S. release of Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind as Warriors of the Wind. That experience helped define how the studio wanted its films presented outside Japan.
Miyazaki's own films became central to that rise. Princess Mononoke was the first animated film to win the Japan Academy Film Prize for Picture of the Year, and Spirited Away became Japan's highest-grossing film and won the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature. In 2013, Miyazaki retired from feature films, then returned to make The Boy and the Heron in 2023.
Where does Studio Ghibli stand in film history?
Studio Ghibli's milestones kept coming across different decades. The Ghibli Museum opened in October 2001 in Mitaka, Tokyo, giving fans a physical place tied to the studio's world. In October 2023, Studio Ghibli became a subsidiary of Nippon Television Holdings.
The honors also reached beyond film prizes. Studio Ghibli received an honorary Palme d'Or at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival, and in 2026 it received the Princess of Asturias Award in the category of Communication and Humanities. Hayao Miyazaki, who co-founded Studio Ghibli and serves as its honorary chairman, remained one of the names most closely linked to its story from the start.
